Top 5 Mistakes People Make When Buying Gym Flooring (And How to Avoid Them)
Buying gym flooring should be simple. But if you’ve ever tried to compare “rubber tiles”, “gym mats”, SBR, EPDM, thicknesses, and bundles that don’t quite fit your space… you’ll know it can get confusing fast.
The result? People often spend more than they need to, or worse, buy flooring that doesn’t protect the floor, doesn’t feel stable, and needs replacing sooner than expected.
Here are the top 5 mistakes we see (all the time) — and what to do instead.
Mistake #1: Choosing flooring based on price alone
It’s tempting to sort by “cheapest” and call it a day. The problem is: most* cheap flooring often costs you more in the long run. Full transparency, our flooring is excellent value, that's a key part of our proposition, there are many brands that are cheap...but not good.
Common issues with budget-first choices:
-
Tiles that are too soft and feel unstable under a rack
-
Strong rubber smell that lingers
-
Inconsistent thickness (edges don’t sit flush)
-
Faster wear, especially in high-traffic areas
Do this instead:
-
Decide what you need the floor to do (protect concrete, reduce noise, handle dropped weights, look clean)
-
Choose the right spec first, then shop within that spec
If you’re doing heavy lifting, flooring is a safety and protection purchase — not just a cosmetic one.
Mistake #2: Getting the thickness wrong
Thickness is one of the biggest “make or break” factors.
Too thin and you risk:
-
Cracked concrete
-
More noise and vibration
-
Tiles shifting under load
Too thick and you risk:
-
Overpaying for performance you don’t need
-
A spongier feel (depending on material)
-
Doors catching or awkward transitions
Do this instead:
-
Match thickness to training style
-
If you’re unsure, start with your heaviest movement: deadlifts, Olympic lifts, heavy dumbbells, sled work, etc.
A good rule: if you’re regularly dropping weights, you’ll want a more protective setup (and sometimes a dedicated lifting zone or platform).
Mistake #3: Not thinking about what you’re actually doing in the gym
“Gym flooring” isn’t one thing. A powerlifting-focused garage gym has different needs to a HYROX-style space, and both differ from a cardio + dumbbells setup.
Typical mismatches:
-
Buying smooth flooring then doing lots of sled work (too slippery)
-
Buying soft mats then putting a rack on top (wobbly base)
-
Flooring the whole garage when you only needed a lifting zone
Do this instead:
-
List your top 3 training activities
-
Decide if you need a full-room floor, a lifting platform, or a mixed layout
If you tell us what you train for, we can recommend a setup that fits — without overcomplicating it.
Mistake #4: Ignoring subfloor and surface prep
Even the best tiles won’t perform perfectly if the base underneath is uneven, dusty, or damp.
Common problems:
-
Tiles rocking because the concrete isn’t level
-
Edges lifting because the floor wasn’t cleaned properly
-
Moisture issues in garages causing long-term problems
Do this instead:
-
Sweep and vacuum thoroughly before laying tiles
-
Check for obvious high/low spots and address them
-
If your garage has damp issues, deal with that first (it’s worth it)
A little prep makes a huge difference to how premium the finished floor feels.
Mistake #5: Buying the wrong amount (and forgetting the extras)
This one is painful: you order flooring, it arrives, and you’re short — or you’ve got loads left over.
People often forget:
-
Measuring accurately (especially around door frames and alcoves)
-
Wastage for cuts
-
Thresholds/edges if you want a clean finish
-
The layout (brick pattern vs straight lines)
Do this instead:
-
Measure the space in metres (length × width)
-
Add a little buffer for cuts
-
Decide your layout before ordering
If you want, send us your measurements and a quick photo of the space — we’ll sanity-check the quantities.
